Sunglasses Provide More than Just a Cool Look for Kids

School's out for summer which means the warm and sunny weather is upon us and kids are headed outdoors to make the most of their time off. Many parents are aware of the danger of overexposing their children to the sun and will rush to slather on sunscreen and slap on a hat before the family heads outside. While taking these precautions are extremely important, it is equally important to protect your children's eyes from the sun's harmful rays. Just like sunscreen helps prevent premature wrinkling and skin cancer, proper eye protection prevents the damaging UV rays from reaching the eye's lens and retina. Prolonged unprotected sun exposure can cause premature cataracts and early onset of macular degeneration later in life. Children's eyes are at increased risk for permanent damage from sunlight until they are at least 10 years old because the lens in a child's eye does not block as much UV light as an adult's lens does. Furthermore, 80% of total lifetime damage from the sun's harmful rays occurs by age 18. To protect your child's eyes, look for sunglasses that offer 100% UVA and UVB protection and are made of impact-resistant, shatterproof polycarbonate. The wrap-around style of sunglasses offers the greatest amount of protection. And remember, children learn by example, so next time you head outside this summer put on your shades and your little one will be quick to follow.
